Situated over Neolithic human settlements , keeping under the hearth of the town the traces of the old Roman settlements Cedonia, Sibiu is historicaly documented in the XII century under the name of Cibinium and is situated in a special natural environment in the southern part of Transylvania.

In 2007 the town was declared European Capital of Culture together with Luxembourg.

The town can be righteously considered cultural capital of Romania due to secular traditions and artistic heritage which the town and surrounding villages own.

paltinis
Paltinis is testified to be the oldest tourist resort in the country, but also the one situated at the highest altitude (1442 m).
During winter, Paltinis is one of the favorite resorts for winter sports, providing some ski slopes of various difficulties. Skiers have at their disposal a ski lift (on a of 1025 m and a difference of level of 241 m), a ski tow (on a distance of 410 and a difference of level of 138 m) with night time lighting. Slopes: Oncesti I - medium level, 1150 meters long, with a difference of level of 241 meters, equipped with night time lighting and ski lift; Oncesti II - easy level, 450 meters long, with a difference of level of 38 meters, equipped with ski tow. For cross-country skiing, amateurs have at their disposal the Paltinis slopes- The Poplacii Hill, Paltinis- Santa, Paltinis - Daneasa, Oncesti - Paltinis and Gaujoara - Paltinis.

An important tourist attraction in the resort is the Hermitage, a wooden church built in the 3rd decade of the XXth century, where the tomb of Constantin Noica is situated. The church is located at the entrance in the Paltinis resort, at an altitude of over 1350 meters, and it belongs to the archbishopric of Sibiu and is founded by the Bishop Nicolae Balan of Transylvania between 1925 and 1927. It is built out of fir wood and shingle and it imitates the style of the old wooden churches from Transylvania. In the fir Plateau of the hermitage there is the belfry with the two bronze bells, dating from 1927, cast by the former factory "Schieb - Kantz, a metal and a wood bell board .

The Constantin Noica Memorial House (Rest House 12), where the philosopher lived the last years of his life is, as well a point of interest. Constantin Noica ceased to live on the 4th of December 1997.

 - A resort for all seasons, it is a very pleasant place for holidays and a source of great health. It is recommended for the treatment of asthenias, of weak systems, physical and intellectual overstressing, of secondary anemia and growth disorders in children, pleuropulmonary disorders and endocrine diseases.

The town of Rasinari is situated in south-west of Sibiu, at 12 km from it, in the direction of the Paltinis resort, at the foot of the Cindrel Mountains and it is the place of birth of the poet of "our suffering" Octavian Goga, and of the essay-writer Emil Cioran.
Rasinari is a settlement representative for the traditional costumes and popular customs typical for the Marginime.

 - The Octavian Goga Memorial House, arranged in the house of his parents, where the poet was born.
 - The episcopal house built out of wood in 1710.
 - The feudal fortress made out of land, the ruins of a fortress, one of the 7 built before the XIIth century along the Carpathians.
 - The ethnographic museum displays the folk art and ethnography collection.
 - The Memorial House of D.P. Barcianu.
 - The memorial house of the great philosopher and writer Emil Cioran.
 - The mausoleum of Andrei Saguna.
 - The Orthodox Church "Saint Paraskeva - Rasinari (the XIIIth century), the oldest Orthodox church in the village called the" Voroneţul of Transylvania "which was founded in 1383 and restored in the Byzantine style in 1752.

  cisnadioara  
  Cisnadioara is a village belonging to Cisnadie, located at 2 km west of it. Access is possible from the Sibiu county road to Rasinari then fallowed by 5 km on a modernized road. Located in a natural landscape of extraordinary beauty, Cisnadioara presents to the tourists a few objectives that are worthy of visiting.
 
 
Here you can visit:
 - The basilica fortress in Romanece style on the top of St. Michael’s hill founded at the end of the XII century.
 - The monument is referred to in the deed by means of which magister Gocelinus donates it to Cîrta Monastery . Inside the church there are still preserved the funeral stones of the soldiers from the German and Austro-Hungarian armies fallen in the First World War.
 - The fortification around the church is composed out of a oval plan masonry premises . Some defense towers and holes through which stones were launched against besiegers are also partially preserved.

  At 14 km north-west of Sibiu, Ocna Sibiului is a permanent balneary resort in the Depression of Sibiu (410 m altitude). Used since the Dacian-Roman times when from these salt mines salt was being extracted. Today, 15 sodium chloride mineral water lakes occupy the cavities of the old salt mines, some of them are being used by the spa establishment, others as public swimming pools.
 
 
Here you can visit:
 - The balneary resort of Ocna Sibiului has became famous over time and is more and more asked for, due to the natural therapeutic factors that it offers: highly concentrated salted water of the lakes, mildly mineralized sapropelic mud, the mineral water of the Horea Spring, the sedative topoclimate of hills.
 - Out of the 15 lakes formed by the flooding of the former salt mines, the Brancoveanu, Red Lake and Black lakes are the most salted in Europe, with a salinity of 415 gr. / liter of salt, the Avram Iancu lake, the deepest salt lake from a salt mine in Romania , 130 m, and the Lake With No Bottom is declared a natural monument due to its unique heliothermic phenomenon.

  The town of Sadu is situated at the foot of Cindrel and Lotru Mountains, at the mouth of the valley of the Sadu river and it is located at 18 km away from Sibiu. The settlement is made up of several small villages lying along Sadu river course, where hydrotechnical arrangements have been carried out since the  XXth century.

 - The Sadu I hydra-electric power station (1896) with the Romanian Energy Museum, the first hydro-electrical power station in Romania;

  The Poplaca village is situated at 9 km south-west from the city of Sibiu in a very picturesque natural environment, with the typical appearance of Romanian settlements from the foot of the mountains, old as the hills with relatively narrow streets (alleyway) and quite tortuous so that you realize that they were not drawn out by any specific plan (as it is done when a colonization is done).
Most alleyways are paved with river stones. The access in the village is done through the modernized county road Sibiu - Poplaca. The relief is hilly and it’s crossed in the middle of the village by the Valea Poplacii Creek.

 
Here you can visit:
 - The Orthodox Church with the titular saint "St. John the Baptist" from Poplaca: A historical monument, the church is located in the middle of the village dating from 1793. Entirely painted in fresco between 1793-1810, it was sanctified only in 1819 by Bishop Vasile Moga.
